Rescue that resume!

Rescue that resume!

For job seekers who are entering the market for the first time or switching jobs, a resume is often the first impression they’ll make on potential employers.

It turns out, there’s a lot of resume advice out there. A lot. But if you’re trying to craft a resume of your own, you may not have to go it alone! If you’re still in school or you’ve recently graduated, your college or university’s student services department can look over your resume and give some great advice about how to catch a potential employer’s eye.

First, it’s a good idea to make a new resume or update your existing one. Then, make an appointment with your school’s student services office and get an expert’s opinion.

To help you get started, here are a few tips that can help you avoid common resume blunders:

  1. Rushing to complete your resume.
Don’t rush through your resume! Typos, misspellings and grammatical errors are some of the most common resume mistakes, but they’re also some of the easiest to fix. Just have someone you trust look it over before sending it in.
  2. Including irrelevant information
Even though things like your marital status, children, hobbies, salary history or physical appearance may be important to you, a potential employer doesn’t need to read about them on your resume.  Leave them off your resume and your colleagues will learn more about you and your personal life once you get the job.
  3. Too much or not enough information
Resumes that ramble on for days or don’t include the information employers need to know won’t help your chances. One page resumes are a good rule of thumb, but if you have more relevant information to share don’t sell yourself short just to fit length requirements. Also, make sure your resume viewer gets a good idea of your qualifications and skills – don’t leave out important information.

Now, it’s time to go forth and get that job! Remember to check with the student services office at your school and take advantage of all the resume help you can get.
